Waldvogel Whitetails started as a hobby in Wisconsin in the late 1980’s. Back then we were nothing but dairy farmers with a passion for whitetail deer. Knowing a few people that were raising deer, we decided to clear an acre of land that had no other useful purposed for agriculture. The grand idea at that time was to have deer; just deer; plain ‘ol brown deer. We had no idea where this passion would possibly go. Our only interest was to have whitetail deer to enjoy, and we made that happen. We bought a couple deer from the few local producers that were around in those days. We thought the selection was very limited, but we didn’t care about genetics, pedigree, or production back then, we were happy just having deer. This went on for a few years and we found out a little more about the business and inevitably, met several more people in the state that shared our passion and were raising whitetails. We also met a few people that ran hunting preserves. It was then that we decided this hobby could actually pay for itself, if managed properly with the right genetics. Realizing that genetics was the key to raising the right size bucks for the preserves was the turning point for Waldvogel Whitetails.
We took that experience, desire to improve, our goal to have the “business” break even, another 10 acres of land, and started the next chapter in the Waldvogel Whitetails story. We knew the first deer we started with were not going to get us where we wanted to go, so they lived out there life in the original pens. After putting up new pens on adjacent land, we went to few of the local deer farmers who we felt had the best genetics available. We purchased a yearling buck we named “Chief” and a few select does to start our breeder program. Shortly thereafter, we bought a buck fawn we named “Boomer”, and a couple more does along the way. We bred these animals for a few years and decided another buck was needed to diversify our genetics. So, we went out and found “Angus”, the third and final breeder buck purchased to solidify our foundation. We continued breeding these animals when one of the most important additions to our herd came along. That addition was a huge dose of LUCK!!! Angus crossed over our Chief does extremely well, producing sires such as Flip and Max. Also, even though Boomer produced many fantastic sons, it was his daughters that made him famous. His daughters produced bucks that paved the way for leaders in the whitetail industry. I would like to say that I knew I was building the proper foundation for what has become, arguably, the most productive line of whitetail deer ever grown. The truth, however, is much more humbling. I believed I was crossing the right bucks with the right does, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be as successful as it has become.
Max coming onto the scene as a phenomenal two year old in 1999 was a nice surprise given we did not know then what we know now. Back then a 150"” two year old was considered pretty good. It was then when Max grew an unheard of 200”" rack as a two year old. Here was a buck setting the new standard for size for all whitetail bucks. Of course, word spread pretty quickly that an unknown deer farmer had this unbelievable buck. By this time, deer farming was gaining leaps and bounds all across the country, and people came from all over to see this phenom buck called “Max”. Even then, no one knew the real value and impact Max was to have in the whitetail deer farming industry. What was not known then was that it wasn’t his size that made Max special. What made Max special was his ability to sire sons that, again, set the standard for all whitetail bucks. Also, his daughters have proven themselves time and again as being powerhouse females. In fact, it was a Max daughter that produced a new world record son named Rolex. Max lived a long and productive life at Waldvogel Whitetails. His legacy will live on forever through his sons, daughters, and their sons and daughters.
The future
A lot has changed and evolved in the deer farming industry since we started with our “hobby”. The advent of artificial insemination has allowed all deer farmers’ access to nearly any sire they wish to cross into their herd. We are no different than anyone else in that regard. We continually strive to improve our genetics by using other sires with our does, and occasionally adding does to our herd that we can cross with our sires. It is our intent and goal to continue being successful leading the whitetail industry by producing the most desirable animals for our customers. Our passion for deer has never changed, only deepened, since we started raising deer so many years ago.
I hope you have enjoyed reading and learning about the “Waldvogel story”. I am deeply honored and humbled to know that the Waldvogel line of whitetail deer has become such a big part of the whitetail deer industry. If you have deer, I hope they bring you as much success and happiness as ours have brought us. Please contact me if you have any further questions about our genetics. We welcome farm visitors and would be happy to show you the facilities and animals. Please call or email to schedule.
